Choose the route before the cheapest departure

Learning how to book train tickets in China starts with the exact departure and arrival stations. A city can have several stations far apart. Check the station shown on the train you want, then compare its distance from your hotel and the place you will visit next.

Use the official China Railway 12306 website or app, a station ticket counter, or an authorised booking service. The English 12306 service accepts eligible foreign passports. Complete the account and identity steps early enough to deal with a problem before your preferred departure sells out.

Compare the whole journey, including transfers to and from stations. A faster train to an inconvenient station may not save time overall. For a travel day, avoid placing a fixed admission immediately after arrival unless the connection leaves a comfortable margin.

Enter passenger details carefully

Use the passenger’s actual document details and follow the booking system’s instructions for names. Check the document number, date, train number and seat class before paying. If someone else books for you, ask them to send the completed ticket details, not only a message saying the request was submitted.

Identity verification is part of the booking process. Follow the status and instructions in your account; where online verification cannot be completed, ask the official service or station about the available procedure. Do not create several slightly different identities to work around an error.

For children, use the current railway rules and required identity details. Do not assume airline age categories or another country’s train rules apply. Keep the family’s tickets together for checking, while each traveller still carries the document needed for their own journey.

At the station

Bring the original identity document used to buy the ticket. An itinerary printout is useful for reference but is not a replacement travel document. Save the train number, departure time, carriage and seat information offline.

Allow time for reaching the right entrance, identity checks, security and finding the gate. For an unfamiliar station, planning to arrive about an hour before departure is a useful starting allowance, with more time in busy periods or when assistance is needed. This is planning advice, not a universal official cutoff.

Use the departure board to confirm the gate for your train number. If the automated document reader does not work, ask staff for the supported lane. Once boarding starts, follow signs for the platform and carriage rather than joining a queue simply because it is moving.

Luggage, changes and arrival

Pack so that you can move your own bags through the station and into the carriage. Check the current allowance and prohibited-item rules before travel, especially for oversized bags, aerosols and batteries. Keep documents and essentials in a small bag you can reach without unpacking the main case.

A booking request is not the same as an issued ticket. If you use a waiting list or an agency, confirm when the seat is actually secured. For a change or refund, use the original booking channel and read the conditions before cancelling an existing seat.

On arrival, follow the exit signs and check the agreed meeting point for any pickup. Large stations may have several exits. Tell the driver your train number and actual station, and keep the contact details accessible until you have met. A station transfer and a guide service should be specified separately in your travel proposal.
