Plan at a glance
- Spend more time beside the hills by choosing the right overnight bases
- Match your river outing to your comfort and available time
- Keep transfers, luggage and sightseeing in one workable plan
Start with three full sightseeing days
This Guilin travel guide recommends three full sightseeing days for a first visit, in addition to the time needed to arrive and leave. Spend some time in Guilin, make the journey towards Yangshuo part of the trip, and keep a full day for its countryside. Add another full day, or an overnight stop, for Longji's rice terraces.
Guilin city is useful for arrivals, city sights and departures. Yangshuo is farther south, with easier access to rural lanes, the Yulong River and several hill viewpoints. These are two different bases. Staying in Guilin and commuting to Yangshuo every day adds road time that you could spend outdoors.
For three nights, one in Guilin and two in Yangshuo can work well when your arrival and departure allow it. Arrive in Guilin, take a city walk, then travel towards Yangshuo the next day. Enjoy the countryside before continuing your journey. A late arrival or an early flight changes that balance; count usable hours, not just calendar days.
With only one full day, choose a focused city visit or one river outing. A cruise, Longji and a relaxed afternoon in Yangshuo will not fit together. You will usually enjoy one place more by leaving time for lunch, walking and looking around than by adding another distant stop.
Choose your river experience first
The longer Li River cruise is a seated journey through limestone hills, with time to watch the landscape change. The usual downstream journey leaves a pier outside central Guilin and finishes in Yangshuo. Treat it as the main activity of that day. The official site also lists different routes, so check the exact endpoints of the ticket you choose.
A three-star or four-star boat choice mainly concerns the onboard experience. Compare the actual boat, seat category, meal and total package, rather than assuming the higher class sees different hills. Neither label promises a private boat, an empty deck or your preferred window seat.
Yulong River rafting is a separate experience near Yangshuo, closer to the water and usually shorter. It is not a small version of the full Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise. Check the chosen pier's participation rules, life-jacket requirements and current operation before planning it for your group. A riverside walk is a useful alternative when someone cannot join.
You do not need a boat every day. A countryside walk or cycle ride gives you another view of the same landscape, with time to stop. Choose a route suited to your road confidence; a rural setting does not mean that every lane is free of vehicles.

What is worth keeping in Guilin city?
Keep a half day for one or two city sights rather than trying to visit every hill. Elephant Trunk Hill is an easy-to-recognise river landmark; the appeal is seeing the arch and its setting, not filling several hours. Check the current entrance arrangements before walking over.
Reed Flute Cave offers illuminated limestone formations and a change from outdoor scenery. It suits people interested in caves, but it is not a daylight landscape experience. Consider the walking surface, steps and time inside when deciding whether it fits your group.
Choose Jingjiang Princes City if buildings and local history interest you. It gives a different focus from another river viewpoint. Ask about the available interpretation if historical context matters; access to a site and an English guided visit are separate things.
In the evening, walk beside a selected section of Rong Lake or Shan Lake, have dinner nearby, or choose a city-waterway cruise. A night cruise gives changing views of illuminated bridges and lakes. It does not replace the daytime Li River trip into the countryside, and you can enjoy a city evening without buying both.

Choose a hotel for the part of the trip you want
In Guilin, a central hotel near your chosen lake or riverside walk can make a short stay simple. Check the actual walking route to restaurants, not just the hotel's distance from a landmark. A room facing a busy road may matter more to your sleep than a partly blocked river view.
In Yangshuo town, staying within a practical walk of meals is convenient. Directly beside West Street's evening activity may be less suitable if you want an early night. Ask about the room's position, soundproofing and vehicle access before choosing by photographs alone.
A countryside hotel near the Yulong River suits a stay built around short walks and outdoor time. The trade-off is that dinner choices and onward transport may need more planning. Confirm how you will reach the hotel after dark, whether its restaurant serves dinner and whether your room has steps or lift access.
For families and friends sharing, ask about actual beds, breakfast times, laundry and space for bags. A scenic room does not automatically have a balcony you can safely use with children. Confirm the exact room category, rather than assuming all rooms match the main picture.
Avoid changing hotels for one more view unless that move helps the route. Two nights in one Yangshuo base can be more relaxing than carrying bags between town, river and hillside properties. Keep the last night close enough to the station or airport for your departure time.
Add Longji as a separate outing
Longji is in Longsheng County, northwest of Guilin, away from the Yangshuo route. The attraction is cultivated hillsides, village paths and the way the fields follow the slopes. It needs a full day from Guilin, not a spare afternoon after the cruise.
Choose one main area, such as Ping'an or Jinkeng/Dazhai, for a day visit. Travel time, walking and lunch quickly fill the day. An overnight stay is more useful for people who want early or late light, longer walks or time in more than one area.
The terraces change with planting and harvesting. Reflective water, green rice and golden crops are different seasonal stages; no single month guarantees the same scene in every village. Ask for a recent photograph from the exact area before making a special photography journey.
A terrace hotel may involve uphill steps after the vehicle stops. Check luggage help and the walking route in advance. Keep to established paths, ask before photographing people and avoid entering working fields for a better angle.
Make transport and weather part of the plan
Guilin, Guilin North and Guilin West are separate railway stations. Yangshuo station is near Xingping, not beside West Street in Yangshuo town. Match every pickup to the station printed on your ticket. A short train ride can still involve two road transfers, waiting and security checks.
If your main aim is to reach a Yangshuo hotel, compare the complete road and rail journeys. If your aim is to see the river, a cruise can make sense even though it takes much longer. Arrange luggage separately when changing hotels on a boat day; do not assume your booking includes baggage delivery.
For warm or wet days, start outdoor activities early, carry drinking water and leave time indoors or at your hotel. Rain can change paths and river operations. A cave visit is one possible alternative, subject to opening and access, rather than a promise that all attractions stay open in bad weather.
Keep meals near the day's route. Guilin rice noodles are an easy local meal to try, but toppings and broth vary. Explain allergies or dietary requirements before ordering. A vegetable dish may still use meat stock or other animal ingredients; translation help can be more useful than a long list of restaurant names.
A tailored plan is most useful when it connects your real arrival time, hotel, boat or terrace outing and onward journey. Ask for transport, English guiding, tickets, meals and optional activities to be itemised. You can explore many city areas independently and arrange help only for the days where it solves a specific problem.
