Huayan Temple Datong: Liao–Jin Halls & Buddhist Sculpture

Huayan Temple brings Datong’s history into the scale of a courtyard, a timber hall and a human face. Its surviving Liao and Jin heritage makes it an absorbing visit alongside the city’s better-known cliff and cave monuments.

The place and its story

Founded in 1038 during the Liao dynasty, the monastery occupies the southwestern part of Datong’s old city and faces east. The visit is especially rewarding for travellers interested in how buildings, sculpture and religious practice share a space.

Huayan Temple is not a single unchanged building from one date. Historic halls sit within a larger complex shaped by repair, reconstruction and continuing care. Read the labels at each hall to distinguish the age of its structure from later decoration or renewed surroundings.

What to see and experience

Great Buddha Hall
Allow time to absorb the scale of the principal hall, its roof and the relationship between the courtyard and interior. A pause outside helps you appreciate proportions that are easy to miss while moving directly between doors.
Bhagavan Sutra Hall
This hall preserves important Liao-period sculpture. Look at the different gestures, expressions and grouping of figures, observing the viewing and photography rules that protect them.
A closer look
The famous smiling bodhisattva with clasped hands is one reason to visit Huayan Temple, but smaller differences between figures and the timber setting deserve attention too.

Tickets and what is included

Seasonal admission
Official notices reviewed list peak-season adult admission at CNY 50 and the November 2025–March 2026 low-season price at CNY 40. Confirm the applicable price for your date; the older winter notice is not a promise for every future winter.
Interpretation and concessions
Check concession documents and any interpretation fee separately. A private guide is not automatically part of Huayan Temple admission, and language availability should be confirmed before booking a service.

Opening and access

Date-specific opening
Consult the current 大同华严寺景区 notice for opening, last-sale and closing times. These are different deadlines; arriving before closing does not necessarily leave time to enter and see the halls.
Individual halls
Cleaning, conservation or religious arrangements may restrict a hall without closing the whole complex. Check important interiors before arranging a visit around one particular sculpture.

Before you visit

  1. Buy for the intended date through the current official channel or authorised on-site process. Keep your passport available and check the document requirements for any discounted admission.
  2. Place Huayan Temple within an old-city visit, with time to look slowly rather than using it as a short stop between transfers. Check whether luggage storage is available before arriving with large bags.

Travel, timing and comfort

Location and timing
The temple is in the old city and can be paired with a selective walk towards the walls. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for the complex; this is a planning estimate rather than an admission time limit.
Comfort and respect
Expect thresholds, steps and changes between outdoor light and darker halls. Keep voices low, follow marked routes and ask staff about access arrangements if steps are difficult.

Questions before your visit

Is Huayan Temple the same visit as Yungang?

No. The monastery is an old-city architectural and sculpture visit; Yungang is a separate cave-art site west of the city. Seeing both can add useful context rather than simply repeating the same experience.

Should I combine it with the city wall?

Yes, if your energy and the day’s opening arrangements allow. Keep enough time for the temple interiors before moving to an outdoor wall walk.
