Plan at a glance
- Choose the correct panda base before booking.
- Leave time for food and a seated tea break.
- Separate nearby day trips from longer mountain journeys.
How many days should you plan?
This Chengdu travel guide starts with two or three full days in the city. That allows a panda visit, a few neighbourhood or cultural stops and time to enjoy meals without rushing. Add a separate day for Leshan; a Jiuzhaigou visit needs a longer extension with its own transport and accommodation.
A simple first day can combine a panda-base visit with an easy afternoon. On another day, choose a temple, older shopping lanes or a museum according to your interests. Keep the evening for dinner or a performance, not both on a tight clock.
Do not turn Chengdu’s slower pace into an itinerary full of supposedly relaxing stops. Tea, lunch and walking still take time. A short list with room to stay longer is more useful than a long list of places you barely enter.
Pandas: get the place name right
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the usual city-based choice for a first panda visit. Dujiangyan and other panda facilities are separate places with different access and programmes. A booking described only as panda base is not precise enough.
Use the named base’s official ticket information and reserve the appropriate session. Plan the route around its current entrances and open areas. Do not promise a particular panda, cub or behaviour at a fixed time; animals are not a timed performance.
For children, allow breaks and choose a manageable route. Trying to walk every enclosure can be less enjoyable than watching a few animals patiently. A normal visitor ticket should not be confused with a special educational programme.

Food, tea and an evening out
Try a few different foods rather than making every meal a hot-pot challenge. Ask about chilli, Sichuan pepper and ingredients; spicy and numbing are different sensations. A mild dish or familiar staple alongside something new makes sharing easier.
A tea stop is a chance to sit, watch the surroundings and let the day slow down. Ask the price and what is included before ordering. A busy public teahouse and a hosted tea session offer different experiences, so choose for your interest rather than the label.
For a Sichuan opera evening, read the programme and seat category. Face changing may be one act in a mixed show. Check the duration and travel time so that dinner does not become a race to reach the theatre.
Stay and travel with less backtracking
Compare hotels by their exact address, public transport and nearby food. Being in a popular district does not guarantee a short walk from the station. If planning early departures, check breakfast arrangements and the pickup entrance as well.
Chengdu has two main passenger airports, Tianfu and Shuangliu. Confirm the code and terminal on every flight; an airport change is a substantial transfer, not a move between neighbouring terminals.
For trains or a day trip, write the actual station into the plan. Leave time to reach it, pass security and find the gate. Save Chinese place names and your hotel address for navigation and pickup.

A three-day Chengdu plan
Day one: settle into the city with a neighbourhood walk and a meal. Choose one compact area rather than crossing Chengdu for several short stops. A teahouse can provide a proper break as well as an introduction to the city’s slower social spaces. You do not need to fill the first afternoon with tickets.
Day two: make the panda base the main visit. Start according to the reservation and the conditions of the day, and allow time for walking inside. After returning, keep the afternoon light. If an opera performance interests you, choose an evening that still leaves time for dinner and travel to the venue.
Day three: choose between another city day and a trip to Leshan. A city day can focus on food, a museum or a longer neighbourhood walk. Leshan adds a substantial journey and needs its own decision about the land visit and river view. Do not call it a spare-hour excursion.
If you want both Leshan and a fuller city visit, add a day. If you also want Jiuzhaigou, treat it as another part of the trip with its own transport and accommodation rather than an ordinary extension of a Chengdu afternoon.
This outline assumes three full days. A late arrival and early departure can turn three nights into far less sightseeing time. Count your useful hours before deciding whether the plan needs trimming.
Which panda experience do you mean?
A standard panda-base visit is primarily about observing animals and learning from the setting and displays. It does not include handling a panda or access behind the scenes. Choose it if you want to see pandas without building the whole trip around a specialist activity.
A volunteer or education programme is a different product. Ask for the exact operator, site, date, age requirements, activities and current confirmation. Do not book flights around a vague promise that a programme is “usually available”.
Photography also needs realistic expectations. Animals may be resting, eating away from a clear sightline or using a different part of an enclosure. Allow time and accept the conditions rather than treating one particular pose as something a ticket guarantees.
If several people in the group have different levels of interest, agree how long to spend at the base. A good visit can end while everyone is still enjoying it; staying until every enclosure has been checked is not a requirement.
Plan food around your tolerance and appetite
Hotpot is a meal to sit over, not something to squeeze into a short transfer. Ask about the broth, how ingredients are charged and the portion size before ordering. If the group has mixed spice preferences, discuss options with the restaurant instead of assuming a divided pot solves every dietary need.
A mild broth can still contain ingredients that matter for an allergy or a vegetarian diet. Ask specifically about the stock and sauces. Keep a clear description of serious dietary restrictions that staff can understand.
Do not make every meal hotpot. Noodles, dumplings, rice dishes and vegetable dishes can provide variety, with the exact choice depending on what a restaurant serves. A lighter lunch may work better before a large evening meal.
For a food-focused afternoon, keep the route compact and order small amounts. The pleasure comes from tasting different things and having time to talk, not from turning the day into a race between distant restaurants.
Getting around without losing the day
Choose the hotel after marking the main visits on a map. A useful metro connection and nearby places to eat may matter more than being beside one attraction you will visit only once. Check the walk from the station with luggage.
For airport transfers, read the airport name on the booking carefully. Chengdu Tianfu and Chengdu Shuangliu are different airports. A domestic connection or a later departure may use a different one from your arrival, so do not reuse the first transfer plan without checking.
For a private car day, clarify the pickup, waiting arrangement, included stops and return. A driver and an English-speaking guide are different services unless the proposal explicitly combines them.
Leave an unbooked block in the city itinerary. It gives you somewhere to move a neighbourhood walk if the panda visit takes longer, or time for a proper meal if travel has been tiring. It is useful planning space, not wasted time.
