Plan at a glance
- Check the arrival station before buying.
- Use the same travel document for booking and travel.
- Confirm mainland entry permission separately.
A station name changes the journey
For a Hong Kong to Shenzhen train journey, compare the arrival station with your hotel or first appointment. Shenzhen has more than one railway station, and a short train ride can still leave a substantial onward journey.
Check the exact service available for your date rather than choosing from an old timetable. Read the station names on the final ticket and save them with the hotel address.
A high-speed service from Hong Kong West Kowloon and an urban rail journey to a land border crossing are different arrangements. Their stations, ticketing and border steps should not be mixed in one set of directions.
Tickets and travel documents
Book using the traveller’s correct details and carry the original document used for the booking. Check the booking instructions for your document type, especially if the name format differs from what an agent expects.
Confirm the permission needed to enter mainland China and, if returning, Hong Kong. A confirmed train ticket does not establish immigration eligibility.
If an agent is handling the ticket, ask for the issued booking confirmation. A request or payment receipt alone may not show that the specific train seat has been secured.
At Hong Kong West Kowloon
MTR’s departure process includes ticket and document checks, security and immigration before boarding. Follow the reporting guidance for your ticket and allow extra time if you are unfamiliar with the station or travelling during a busy period.
Do not use the train’s short running time as a reason to arrive late. The border process happens before the departure, and the walk through the station is part of the journey.
Keep passports and booking details easy to reach. For a family, agree who holds each document and make sure every traveller can be identified correctly at the checks.

After arriving in Shenzhen
Save the hotel or meeting address in Chinese as well as English. Check the onward metro route or agreed pickup point before leaving the arrival area.
If someone is meeting you, send the actual station and train details, not just “Shenzhen”. Confirm which exit or pickup area to use so that neither side waits in the wrong place.
For a day trip, choose a realistic return train and keep the last activity near a useful transport connection. Allow time to collect luggage and reach the station rather than counting only the ride back to Hong Kong.
