Plan at a glance
- Follow the water from South Lake into the lanes
- Look beyond the familiar reflection photographs
- Leave time for lunch and the return journey
Come for water, buildings and a slower walk
Hongcun village is worth visiting for the way its old buildings and water fit together. South Lake, Moon Pond and the narrow lanes give you several different views within one visit. It works well as a separate village day before or after Mount Huangshan.
Hongcun and Xidi form a UNESCO World Heritage property in southern Anhui. They are two separate villages, not two entrances to the same attraction. Choose one for a shorter visit or allow proper travel time if you want both.
Start with a half-day allowance rather than a quick photograph stop. That gives you room for the main water views, a walk through the lanes and a meal without turning every turn into a deadline.

A simple way to spend the visit
Begin around South Lake, where the water provides a broad view of the buildings. Stop where there is space, rather than blocking the narrow crossing for a photograph. Morning or late-afternoon light can change the scene, but weather and other visitors remain part of the visit.
Continue into the village lanes and towards Moon Pond. Notice the water channels, doorways and carved details as you walk. A guide can help explain what you are looking at; without one, a slower pace lets you see more than a sequence of photo locations.
Choose a few buildings that are actually open to visitors instead of trying every doorway. Public admission does not make private homes available to enter. Ask before photographing people closely or stepping into a resident’s courtyard.
Finish with lunch or a drink before the return journey. Keep the last part of the visit flexible so you can spend longer at a place you like rather than racing back for an avoidable connection.

Check tickets and the passport process
Use the official tourism platform or an authorised seller and select Hongcun itself. A package for another village, a transport-only booking or a hotel room is not automatically an admission ticket.
Confirm the travel date, accepted passport details and entry procedure for your group. Ask whether you need to collect or activate anything at the entrance and carry the original document used for the booking.
For children or concession tickets, confirm the actual eligibility and evidence accepted. Do not assume a discounted option shown for one document category applies to every foreign visitor.
Ticket prices, re-entry and refund conditions should come from the dated product you buy. This guide does not repeat an unverified fixed fare or promise that an overnight stay automatically covers repeated entry.

Arrange the road connection
Hongcun is not beside a mountaintop hotel or the upper cable-car stations. Plan it as a separate road journey after descending, or on another day from your chosen base. Avoid adding it to an already full mountain day just because both are listed under Huangshan.
An official transport announcement for services from January 2026 lists a Huangshan North–Hongcun connection with intermediate stops. Check the actual departure, boarding point and journey for your date; a listed service is not an assurance of a departure whenever your train arrives.
If using a driver, give the exact village entrance or agreed meeting point and decide what happens to luggage while you visit. A return pickup should have a time and contact method, not simply ‘meet outside’.
For onward rail travel, allow a road buffer and station time. If you have a late arrival into the region, a nearby overnight may be easier than forcing a village visit between the train and a distant hotel.

Stay overnight only if it suits your pace
A village overnight can give you an earlier walk and an evening after the main excursion of the day. Choose it for that slower pace, not a promise that the village will be empty.
Check how far you carry bags from the vehicle drop-off, the room’s stairs, bathroom and heating or cooling. Traditional-looking buildings vary in comfort and noise; attractive exterior photographs do not answer those questions.
Ask about breakfast and the next morning’s transport before booking. If you plan to go straight to the mountain, the departure arrangement is part of the stay, not something to leave until checkout.
For a shorter holiday, a half-day visit from a suitable base may be enough. Spend the time on the water, lanes and buildings that brought you here, then leave comfortably for the next part of your trip.
