The place and its story
Tiananmen Square is a monumental civic space on Beijing’s central axis. Its open scale, the Monument to the People’s Heroes and the surrounding public buildings place the city’s modern national history beside the approach to the former imperial palace.
Treat Tiananmen Square reservation for foreigners as a distinct step in planning. Walking through the square, ascending Tiananmen Rostrum, entering the National Museum and visiting the Palace Museum are different activities; one confirmation does not automatically grant access to every building.
What to see and experience
- The square
- Take time to understand the layout and the relationship between the central monument and the buildings around it.
- Flag raising
- A separate time-sensitive plan is needed for the ceremony. Check that day’s official time and reservation session rather than using a fixed sunrise hour.
- Surrounding museums
- Reserve a specific museum because you want to visit it, and follow its rules; do not assume square access includes indoor exhibitions.
Tickets and what is included
- Admission
- Entry to the square itself is free. A paid service charge is not an official square ticket.
- Separate sites
- Tiananmen Rostrum and neighbouring museums have their own access arrangements; their booking rules and opening days differ.
- Identity
- Bring the passport used for the reservation, not only a photo of it.
Opening and seasonal changes
- Visit session
- Use the session shown in your confirmation and allow extra security time. Temporary controls can change pedestrian access.
- Outdoor conditions
- Large parts of the square are exposed. Prepare for sun, wind or cold and follow rules on permitted items.
Before you visit
- For Tiananmen Square reservation for foreigners, the government advises the “天安门广场预约参观” WeChat mini-program when overseas phone verification on the web portal is unavailable.
- Enter every visitor’s name and passport number accurately. An authorised person can book on your behalf where the official process allows it.
- Check the successful booking record, session and current approach route. Do not book a second attraction on the assumption that security queues will be short.
Travel, timing and comfort
- Time to allow
- About 1–1.5 hours for the square itself can work, with security and any ceremony waiting added separately.
- Combining the palace
- Allow a separate Forbidden City reservation and sufficient time to reach the Meridian Gate.
- Getting there
- Plan your permitted walking approach from the metro or drop-off point; vehicles do not take visitors across the pedestrian square.
Questions before your visit
Does a Tiananmen Square reservation for foreigners include the Forbidden City?
No. They have separate booking systems and identity checks. Certain neighbouring-site reservations can facilitate square access under official rules, but this is not universal admission.
Can I arrive for flag raising with an afternoon reservation?
Use the correct ceremony-related session and official instructions; an afternoon confirmation should not be treated as early-morning access.
