The place and its story

Completed in 1420, the Forbidden City served as the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its sequence of gates and halls gives physical form to the hierarchy of the court: broad ceremonial spaces lead towards the more intimate world of the imperial household.

Before choosing Forbidden City tickets, decide whether you want a first introduction along the central axis or a longer visit with collection galleries. The palace is a large outdoor complex as well as a museum; trying to see every open courtyard can leave little time to understand any of them.

What to see and experience

Ceremonial halls
Read the Outer Court as a sequence of spaces for imperial authority. Some interiors are viewed from outside, and restoration can change access.
Inner Court
Look beyond the large halls to residential courtyards and the Imperial Garden. Side routes can provide context that a hurried central-axis walk misses.
Collections
The Treasure Gallery and Gallery of Clocks have separate admission. Choose them for a specific interest rather than adding both automatically.

Tickets and what is included

Adult admission
CNY 60, April–October; CNY 40, November–March. These are museum admission charges, not a guided-tour price.
Additional galleries
Treasure Gallery CNY 10; Gallery of Clocks CNY 10, per person. Check any exhibition-specific arrangements before purchasing.
Ticket choice
Buy Forbidden City tickets for the correct date and session through the museum’s official booking route. A guide booking alone does not establish admission.

Opening and seasonal changes

Seasonal hours
08:30–17:00 April–October, last entry 16:00; 08:30–16:30 November–March, last entry 15:30.
Closures
Normally closed Mondays except public holidays. Individual halls may close for conservation; check current museum notices as well as the calendar.

Before you visit

  1. Start from the official international Visit page and follow its Book Tickets link. The museum normally releases reservations seven days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time.
  2. Use each visitor’s own passport details and bring the same original passport. Follow the purchased session and any identity-verification instructions.
  3. Enter at the Meridian Gate in the south. Plan a northward visit and departure through an authorised exit; reserve Tiananmen Square separately if your approach requires it.

Travel, timing and comfort

Time to allow
Allow roughly 3–4 hours for a selective first visit, longer for extra galleries. This is a planning estimate, excluding travel and security queues.
Walking and comfort
Expect hard paving, thresholds and long distances. Accessible routes exist, but not every hall or side route has identical access.
Nearby continuation
Jingshan Park is a logical separate visit after a northern exit, provided you still have energy for its steps.

Questions before your visit

What if Forbidden City tickets are sold out?

Check official availability again or change the date. Do not rely on a promised unofficial bypass; Jingshan offers an exterior panorama, not admission to the palace.

Can I visit only the museum galleries?

Your route still requires valid palace admission and any relevant gallery ticket. Allow time to reach each exhibition inside the complex.
