The place and its story
Kangbashi became a county-level administrative district in 2016. It is part of Ordos, not a separate prefecture-level city, and its urban landscape has been shaped by planned civic space, cultural buildings and ongoing residential life.
The interest of Ordos Kangbashi lies partly in the gap between an aerial image and a view from the pavement. Walking reveals how distances, planted areas and building forms connect with everyday use at ground level.
What to see and experience
- Architecture and urban scale
- Choose a manageable area and compare the spacing, shapes and sightlines of the buildings. A short walk with pauses can explain the city more clearly than a hurried drive past a long list of façades.
- Public space
- In Ordos Kangbashi, pay attention to how residents use plazas and landscaped areas. People, movement and seasonal changes provide context that a static photograph cannot.
- An evening perspective
- If the current programme suits your dates, an evening walk can show a different side of the district. Lighting or event announcements should be checked individually rather than promised as a nightly attraction.
Tickets and what is included
- District versus individual venues
- Ordos Kangbashi is an urban area, not one enclosed ticketed attraction. Public-space access, entry to a building, a special event and a guided visit can have different requirements.
Opening and access
- Plan the actual spaces
- Outdoor walking and venue opening are separate matters. Check the current opening of any building you intend to enter, and do not assume an evening event follows a permanent timetable.
Before you visit
- For an Ordos Kangbashi city visit, identify the area you want to walk and the meeting point. If interpretation is important, confirm what the explanation covers rather than buying a generic city transfer.
Travel, timing and comfort
- Time and distance
- Allow about half a day for a selective visit, with more time for indoor venues or a relaxed meal. Wide roads and large blocks mean that seemingly adjacent map locations may still require a long walk.
- Weather and comfort
- Bring sun or cold-weather protection and plan rest stops. Match the length of the walk to the weather and group rather than aiming to cover the whole district.
Questions before your visit
Is Ordos Kangbashi still an empty “ghost city”?
That label is an inadequate description of a district with contemporary civic and residential life. Read older reports in their date context and look at the city as it is used today.
Is Kangbashi the whole of Ordos?
No. Other places in Ordos are in different banners or districts and require their own transfers.
