Plan at a glance
- Confirm permission to enter before planning sightseeing.
- Check Tianfu or Shuangliu on both flights.
- Protect the onward flight with a clear return deadline.
The layover length is not sightseeing time
A Chengdu layover tour is possible only when the actual connection and entry conditions allow it. Start with arrival and departure airports, terminals, luggage arrangements and the airline’s check-in requirements. Do not begin by choosing a distant attraction.
Subtract time for leaving the aircraft, entry checks, collecting or storing bags, travel into the city and the return airport process. Keep a margin for delays. A long-looking gap on the flight booking can leave a much shorter usable window.
If the flight is late or entry takes longer than expected, shorten or cancel the outing. The return flight has priority over completing a sightseeing checklist.
Check the airport and entry rules
Tianfu and Shuangliu are different airports. An itinerary that arrives at one and leaves from the other includes a cross-airport transfer. Confirm the exact flight details rather than assuming a Chengdu connection stays in one place.
Leaving the international transit area requires the appropriate entry permission. Check your passport and full onward route against official rules. A transport booking or a city tour does not establish eligibility.
Ask the airline how luggage is handled, especially with separate tickets or an airport change. Do not build a city visit around an assumption that your bags will automatically reach the final destination.

Choose one modest outing
If there is enough usable time, choose a short city walk and meal or another compact visit with straightforward transport. Keep it close to the route you can reliably return from. A panda-base visit needs more than a quick photo stop and should not be squeezed into an uncertain window.
Set the latest departure time from the city before starting. Tell the driver and everyone in the group. Do not keep extending the outing because the next stop appears nearby.
A private transfer can simplify meeting and navigation, but it cannot guarantee traffic or immigration timing. Keep the itinerary conditional on the actual arrival.
When staying at the airport is better
Stay with the airport plan if the connection is tight, entry eligibility is unclear or the group needs sleep. A meal and rest may be more valuable than a hurried city visit.
For an overnight layover, compare a suitable hotel with sightseeing. Confirm transfer arrangements and the next morning’s terminal before choosing where to sleep.
Save the onward flight details and required return time offline. A useful layover plan ends with a calm check-in, not a race through the terminal.
