Dazu Rock Carvings Day Trip from Chongqing: One or Two Sites?

Start with Baodingshan for a first visit. Add Beishan when you want more sculpture and can allow the extra transfer and visiting time.

Plan at a glance

  • Give the carvings time for explanation
  • Choose one site or a fuller two-site day
  • Compare admission and transport inclusions clearly

Choose Baodingshan as your main visit

A Dazu rock carvings day trip from Chongqing is worth planning around the art rather than a quick photograph. At Baodingshan, carved figures and scenes cover the rock face. A guide or good interpretation can help you recognise the stories and details instead of seeing only a long row of statues.

Baodingshan and Beishan are separate sites. For a first visit with limited time, focus on Baodingshan and allow a meal and the full return journey. Add Beishan if sculpture is a strong interest and you are happy with a longer day.

Do not try to turn Dazu into a morning stop before Wulong. They are different excursions in different directions from central Chongqing. Combining them creates a travel-heavy day and leaves less useful time at either place.

Count the road journey and the site transfer

From central Chongqing, use roughly two to three hours each way by road as an initial planning allowance, subject to your pickup, traffic and stops. Confirm the actual route before setting a return appointment. The drive does not include the time spent entering and moving through the visitor facilities.

A rail journey to Dazu South still needs onward road transport. Compare the total hotel-to-site time and the return connection before choosing it because the train itself looks quick. Agree the pickup point at the station if someone will meet you.

If visiting both sites, add the transfer between Baodingshan and Beishan as a separate part of the day. Keep lunch and a little spare time. A longer visit at the first site should not force a rushed last entry at the second.

Check the visitor-centre cutoff and ticket package

The institute’s visitor guide checked on 26 October 2026 lists the Baodingshan visitor centre’s ticket sales ending at 16:00 and checks ending at 16:10. Do not plan arrival from the carving area’s later closing time. Confirm your dated entry instructions when booking.

For an adult budget reference, the official B package lists Baodingshan plus return scenic transport at CNY130 in March–November and CNY115 in December–February, about USD19 and USD17. The D package adds Beishan at CNY150 or CNY130, about USD22 or USD19. These use CNY6.8 per USD, not a live exchange rate.

Those named packages do not include a private car from Chongqing or an English guide. The digital film appears in other packages, so choose by the actual inclusions rather than assuming every combined ticket includes it. Check the final dated price and passport booking method before paying.

Allow time to look and listen

Ask an English-speaking guide to focus on a few scenes and explain what to notice. That can be more memorable than a fast list of names and dates. Confirm the guiding duration and whether it covers both sites when you book a two-site day.

Wear comfortable shoes and expect outdoor walking, steps and changing light. Ask about the appropriate accessible route if anyone needs to avoid stairs. A vehicle transfer to the site does not make every viewing area step-free.

Follow the photography and conservation signs. Keep hands off the carvings and do not expect access to conservation workspaces or restricted areas. Leave time for a drink and a pause before starting the road journey back.

For a fuller visit, reduce other evening plans in Chongqing. A relaxed meal after returning is more realistic than a fixed early cruise that depends on every road connection being on time.
