Plan at a glance
- Separate a gorge viewpoint visit from a high-trail trek.
- Confirm the exact permitted route before committing to overnight bookings.
- Keep an alternative that uses officially open visitor areas.
Can you book the classic two-day route?
Do not book a Tiger Leaping Gorge 2-day trek on the assumption that the classic route is fully open. The official notice available during our October 2026 review lists the high and middle routes among restricted undeveloped areas. Later official reports describe inspections and management work, but they do not provide a clear, blanket reopening of every section.
This guide therefore does not present a departure-ready walking itinerary. Before committing to dates, obtain current confirmation from the responsible local authority or authorised operator for the precise start, finish and intermediate sections. A guesthouse taking a booking, or a recent photograph online, does not establish permission to use the trail.
The official notice carries a 2025 signature date and was posted on the government website in February 2026. Its scope matters more than the date in an old blog title. Unless a later authoritative notice clearly changes the restriction for your proposed route, treat that route as unavailable.

Three different visits are often confused
A managed gorge viewing area is a visit within its current operating boundary. The high trail is a mountain walking route with a different start, finish and terrain. Routes down towards the middle gorge are another distinct undertaking. A ticket or opening announcement for one does not automatically cover the others.
When asking about access, use the Chinese names and a map: 虎跳峡景区 for the managed scenic area, 虎跳峡高路 for the high route and 中虎跳峡 for the middle-gorge area. Ask the provider to mark the exact route it proposes. A reply that simply says Tiger Leaping Gorge is open is not specific enough.
Do not substitute an unofficial descent, ladder or detour when a section is closed. The purpose of the clarification is to choose an allowed visit, not to find a way around a restriction. The same principle applies when weather causes a temporary closure within an otherwise operating site.
What a usable confirmation should contain
Ask for the authority or operator responsible, the date of the information and the map or written description of the permitted sections. It should distinguish visitor access from proposed development, future plans or maintenance work. Keep a copy with your booking records.
For an overnight proposal, ask where the vehicle drops you, where it collects you and which lodging sits on the authorised route. Establish whether luggage is stored or transported separately. The plan must work without relying on a closed section to reach the next stop.
Check the cancellation terms before paying. If access cannot be confirmed, postpone the trek rather than treating a non-refundable room as a reason to proceed. A responsible arrangement should explain what happens when the route or weather makes the original plan unavailable.
Use the two days differently while access is unresolved
A practical alternative is to stay based in Lijiang. Use one day for a visit to an officially open gorge viewing area, only after its dated operation is confirmed. Use the other for Baisha, Shuhe or a focused cultural visit. This preserves variety without presenting a restricted trail as a tourist product.
Another choice is to leave the gorge out and keep a slower city stay. Travellers mainly interested in long-distance walking may prefer to postpone the region until a suitable permitted route is confirmed. A short viewpoint visit should not be sold as the same experience as a mountain trek.
Keep any transfer quote specific to the chosen alternative. A viewing-area round trip, an overnight luggage transfer and a walking guide are different services. Do not assume the price or inclusions of one automatically apply to another.
Terrain and weather still matter after permission is clear
Permission to enter is only the first check. Local authorities have recently highlighted rockfall, unstable slopes and risks after rainfall. Read the current weather and on-site instructions for the actual visiting area. A dry morning does not cancel a closure or prove that a slope is stable.
For any future permitted walking route, match the distance, ascent, exposed sections and exit options to the least confident member of the group. Ask about emergency communication and transport from the finish. Do not replace those details with a broad label such as easy or suitable for everyone.
Recheck access before publication of a bookable itinerary and again before travel. Until the route is clearly confirmed, this page is a planning and access explanation, not an invitation to enter the high or middle trail.
