Xiamen to Kinmen Ferry: Check Entry and Return First

This crossing includes immigration checks. Confirm entry to Kinmen and your return to Xiamen separately before paying for a day trip or onward connection.

Plan at a glance

  • Check both directions before committing to a return trip.
  • Use Wutong and Shuitou terminal details, not Gulangyu piers.
  • Leave room for immigration and weather-related disruption.

This is a different trip from Gulangyu

The Xiamen to Kinmen ferry connects Wutong in Xiamen with Shuitou in Kinmen. It includes departure and arrival formalities. Do not treat it as an ordinary island sightseeing boat or use the Gulangyu terminal instructions to reach it.

The Kinmen tourism authority describes a crossing of about 30 minutes, but that is only the sailing. Your hotel transfer, check-in, security, immigration and transport after arrival make the complete journey much longer. Plan around the operator’s reporting deadline, not the advertised time on the water.

Check the documents for entering Kinmen

Eligibility depends on your nationality, travel document and status. The Bureau of Consular Affairs lists Shuitou Harbor among the ports for its visa-exempt programme, but the programme applies only to travellers who meet its conditions. Check your passport category, remaining validity and required onward or return evidence directly against that guidance.

Mini Three Links regulations also address foreign nationals travelling with the relevant visa or qualifying passport, subject to immigration approval. That is not a blanket promise that every passport holder can travel without preparation. Requirements for residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are different and should not be copied from a foreign-passport checklist.

Complete any required arrival information using the official immigration channel. If your circumstances do not clearly fit the published conditions, obtain guidance from the relevant authority before buying a non-refundable trip.

Check your return to Xiamen separately

Do not assume the permission used to enter mainland China will automatically cover another entry after visiting Kinmen. Check the entries remaining on a visa, or the exact conditions of any visa-free arrangement on which you intend to rely. A return ferry ticket is transport evidence, not entry permission.

Mainland transit-without-visa rules have their own nationality, port and onward-journey conditions. The official policy describes transit to a third country or region; it is not a general authorisation for a same-route out-and-back sightseeing trip. Have the complete itinerary checked rather than relying on an airport rule or another traveller’s experience.

If the return basis is unresolved, do not present this as a confirmed day trip from an ongoing mainland stay. Resolve it first, including any effect on your later flights, hotels and allowed stay.

Book the actual sailing and terminal

Use the carrier or its authorised ticketing channel for the date, available sailing, fare and luggage rules. Ask whether the return has been booked as well as the outbound leg. Record both terminal names and the latest reporting time in a form you can show to a driver.

Carry the original travel documents and booking confirmation. Allow extra time if staff need to check an unfamiliar document or entry condition. Do not leave a passport at your Xiamen hotel because you expect to return that evening.

A day trip needs a realistic sightseeing window after arrival procedures and before return check-in. Choose a compact plan and arrange local transport; do not fill the whole day using only the boat’s sailing duration as a guide.

When to Visit Xiamen

Leave a margin for disruption

Check dated sailing notices, especially during wind, fog or severe weather. Avoid making the final return sailing your only way to catch an important flight or train. Know the refund or change terms and have a workable plan if you need to stay longer.

This article is a planning checklist, not confirmation of anyone’s individual entry eligibility. Before arranging services, we would need the intended route and dates and confirmation that the required documents are in place. A travel booking cannot override an immigration decision.
