11-Day Qinghai and Gansu Tour | Salt Lakes, Desert Roads & Silk Road Art

Your Qinghai and Gansu tour starts with the following arrangements. Meet your guide and driver at Xining Caojiabao Airport or Xining Railway Station and transfer to the city hotel. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes from the airport or 20–30 minutes from the station, depending on the hotel and traffic. There are no fixed visits today.

At around 2,200 metres, Xining is the first stage of a route that continues onto higher plateau roads. Keep the arrival day restful rather than adding a strenuous outing. If you feel comfortable, ask about a short nearby walk and local dinner choices such as yoghurt or Qinghai hot pot. The route’s altitude profile and your individual suitability should be discussed before booking.

Drive about 45–60 minutes to Kumbum Monastery and allow 2–2.5 hours among the accessible halls. Your guide introduces the Gelug Buddhist setting and the craft traditions represented by murals, appliqué and butter sculpture, with actual displays and photography governed by the monastery. Dress respectfully and follow the route allowed to visitors.

Continue approximately 2.5–3 hours toward Qinghai Lake, then spend 1.5–2 hours at an officially open lakeside area. The broad water, grassland and distant mountains are the main experience; entry to protected shoreline is not implied. Allow about another 1.5 hours to Gonghe for the night. This is a full day with roughly five to six hours of road travel in total, so lunch, rests and the lake entry point need to be planned together.

Kumbum Monastery · Qinghai Lake

Allow about 2.5 hours by road from Gonghe to Chaka Sky No. 1. This programme uses that named visitor area, not an automatic ticket to the separately operated Sky Mirror attraction. Spend 2.5–3 hours on its approved viewing route, using the specified scenic transport and staying off closed salt surfaces. Reflections depend on wind, water and light.

Continue for approximately 2.5–3 hours to Dulan as grassland gives way to gravel plains and salt-basin scenery. With five to 5.5 hours of driving plus the visit, today is a substantial transfer day rather than a short lakeside excursion. Prepare water, a lunch stop and toilet breaks before leaving the town services behind.

Chaka Sky No. 1

The drive toward Dachaidan takes roughly four hours through the Qaidam Basin. Keep water and simple supplies in the vehicle, and use the agreed service stops; remote scenery does not mean stopping wherever a photograph looks tempting.

Spend 2.5–3 hours at Dachaidan Emerald Lake, following the official paths and scenic transport between viewing points. The former extraction ponds show different colours according to their minerals, depth and the day’s light. The guide can help with simple landscape composition, but this is not a separately commissioned professional photo shoot. Stay in the Dachaidan area.

Dachaidan Emerald Lake

Follow the permitted G315 road route through the basin. View its undulating sections from the vehicle or a genuinely designated safe stopping area: the carriageway and road shoulders are not photo locations. Continue to Dongtai Jinel Lake for an approximately 45–60-minute stop only where official access is open. Water colour and shoreline access can change.

At Wusute Water Yadan, allow 2.5–3 hours to see wind-shaped ridges beside the water from the operating visitor circuit. A boat trip is optional and separately specified; sunset is weather-dependent. Stay at the confirmed local property in the Water Yadan area. This is another remote road day: allow roughly four to five hours of driving as a provisional planning allowance, subject to the actual authorised route, stops and accommodation position.

Dongtai Jinel Lake · Wusute Water Yadan

Leave the Water Yadan area early for the remote road journey toward Lenghu and the booked Mars Camp visit. Allow at least four to five hours for the main driving stage, with local camp and viewpoint connections adding time. At the camp, the roughly two-hour visit uses the science presentation or simulated activity actually operating on your date; it is not a guarantee of a full space-training programme.

Continue to Heidushan for 1.5–2 hours on the managed visitor circuit, using the required official transport and paths rather than driving onto fragile black slopes. Finish at a local Lenghu hotel. With both visits and the road links, provisionally reserve a long 10–12-hour day; the supplier must verify access, exact route, road surface and closing times before confirming this sequence. A wilderness-camp overnight and stargazing are optional upgrades, with heating, bathrooms, meals and weather arrangements agreed separately.

Lenghu Mars Camp · Heidushan

Cross the Dangjin mountain road toward Gansu, with around three hours as the initial road allowance to the Boluo Zhuanjing film location in the former Aksai county town. Spend about 1.5 hours in the authorised visitor area, distinguishing the old town’s remaining streets and buildings from later film sets. Abandoned-looking structures are not an invitation to enter closed buildings.

Continue approximately 1.5–2 hours to Dunhuang and check in without another major visit. The combined driving is around 4.5–5 hours before breaks and access delays; mountain weather can extend it. Ask your guide for local noodle or lamb-dish suggestions, with dinner chosen separately.

Boluo Zhuanjing Film Base

Follow your officially reserved Mogao Caves slot, allowing about 3.5–4 hours for the booked digital presentation, transfers and the caves selected by the conservation authority. The cave visit follows the official guide and conservation rules; neither a named cave nor private access is guaranteed. Your travel guide coordinates the day but does not replace the required cave guiding arrangements.

Keep the planned 1.5–2-hour mural-copying session at a booked studio, using teaching materials to make a portable piece, then allow 2.5–3 hours at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring toward sunset. The workshop is listed separately as an optional activity pending confirmation of the source package’s scope. With all three elements this is a long day of roughly eight to nine hours of visits before road travel, lunch and queues; the exact Mogao slot and studio session must fit before booking. Camel riding is also optional, and sunset colour is not guaranteed.

Mogao Caves · Mingshashan Crescent Spring

Drive east through the Hexi Corridor for around 4–4.5 hours to Jiayuguan. Allow 2–2.5 hours at the pass, using its gates, courtyards and walls to understand the Ming frontier and movement through the corridor. Keep a lunch and rest stop within this substantial road-and-sightseeing day.

Continue to the Overhanging Great Wall for about 1.5 hours. This restored section climbs sharply along a ridge: active visitors can take an agreed part of the stairway, while others remain near the lower viewpoints. It is not a level promenade. Finish at your Jiayuguan hotel.

Jiayuguan Pass · Overhanging Great Wall

Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours by road to Zhangye Colorful Danxia, then 3–3.5 hours on the operating shuttle-and-platform circuit. Coloured sedimentary bands and eroded hills are best understood from several permitted viewpoints rather than by walking onto the formations. Platforms still involve paths and steps.

Plan the visit around later-afternoon light where the operating hours allow, with the possibility of staying toward sunset. Your guide can suggest framing and vantage points, but rain, cloud and the day’s conditions control the colours. Continue to Zhangye for the night, leaving enough time for the final shuttle and hotel drive.

Zhangye Rainbow Mountains

Drive about 1–1.5 hours each way to Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon and allow 3.5–4.5 hours for the agreed visitor circuit. The full canyon option has substantial stairs, steeper passages and a climb back out. A shorter upper-viewpoint plan with the appropriate official transport is an alternative requiring its own ticket and route confirmation; it is not the same walk without the effort.

After the visit, return to the confirmed central Zhangye address, Zhangye West Railway Station or Zhangye Ganzhou Airport. Road travel and the visit alone occupy about 5.5–7.5 hours before meals, access and departure procedures. Choose a sufficiently late onward service after the actual canyon route is agreed; an early departure requires an explicit programme adjustment, not an unrealistically compressed canyon visit.
