The place and its story
The emperors’ mausoleums are distributed across a mountain-framed basin, each with its own approach and ceremonial architecture. The landscape matters: this is a group of separated sites, not a single palace complex where every hall is a short walk away.
The Ming Tombs offer different kinds of evidence. Changling is valued for its ceremonial architecture, Dingling for its excavated underground palace, and the Sacred Way for the sequence of carved figures along the approach. Select according to your interest in buildings, burial or sculpture.
What to see and experience
- Changling
- The great timber hall gives a sense of imperial ceremony above ground. It is not an excavated public burial chamber.
- Dingling
- An underground visit involves stairs and a distinct museum context. Consider this before choosing it for visitors with mobility concerns.
- Sacred Way
- Animal and official figures form a processional landscape. Allow time to look at individual carvings rather than only passing through.
Tickets and what is included
- Separate sites
- Tickets to the Ming Tombs are sold by site or named combination. Verify the exact places covered before paying.
- Published examples
- The government’s 2024 listing gives Changling CNY 45 high season / CNY 30 low season and Dingling CNY 60 in high season. Use current checkout for the complete dated total.
- Expanded access
- Some newly accessible tombs require advance booking and scenic-area assigned guides. They are not interchangeable with regular open sites.
Opening and seasonal changes
- Regular sites
- The published regular schedule is 08:30–17:30 high season and 08:30–16:30 low season; check the last entry for each chosen site.
- Special visits
- Newly opened tomb visits follow their own booking timetable. Do not use an old “only four sites open” description as current guidance.
Before you visit
- Choose the precise tombs or Sacred Way section you wish to visit.
- Check which are regular-entry sites and which require an accompanied reservation.
- Arrange transport between sites and keep your identification and tickets available.
Travel, timing and comfort
- Time to allow
- A focused selection can take half a day including movement within the tomb area. Travel from central Beijing is additional.
- Transfers
- Allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours by road from central Beijing depending on traffic and the selected tomb.
- Pairing with the wall
- Combine with a Great Wall section only after calculating driving, admission and walking time; the combination is not automatically a relaxed day.
Questions before your visit
Can I enter all thirteen Ming Tombs?
No. Access differs by tomb and booking type, and not every mausoleum is open for ordinary entry.
Which site has an underground palace?
Dingling is the usual excavated underground-palace visit; Changling provides a different, above-ground architectural experience.
