Understand the destination
Dali Ancient Town, Xizhou and Shuanglang have different layouts and relationships with the lake and farmland. Contemporary commerce is present in all of them. Understanding Bai building traditions and the everyday use of streets gives more depth than expecting a place unchanged by tourism.
For first-time Dali tours, balance a town walk with selected lake time and one heritage or mountain visit. Erhai is a large lake, so hotel location strongly affects which activities feel nearby.
Dali tours can be tailored around the subjects you enjoy, with fewer stops and more time at each when that suits your pace.
Places and experiences to compare
The pages below cover 11 places and experiences. Shaxi is in Jianchuan County within Dali Prefecture, not beside central Dali’s lake shore. Dali tours that include Shaxi need a dedicated transfer or a separate stay.

Erhai Lake
Erhai Lake trips introduce a highland lake whose shore settlements, wetlands and mountain backdrop invite different kinds of visiting.

- Lake, corridor and cruise
- Erhai scenery, the managed Eco Corridor and a booked lake cruise have different access rules and time demands. Dali tours need not include all three: choose walking, permitted cycling or a specific sailing according to your interests.
- Historic and living settings
- Chongsheng Temple and Three Pagodas combine ancient towers with a later rebuilt religious complex. Dali Ancient Town and Xizhou offer street-scale observation. Distinguish conservation, reconstruction and continued use rather than calling every visible structure equally old.
- Cangshan route choice
- Cangshan cableways serve different mountain experiences. Choose the actual route, elevation and return arrangements first; access to one cableway does not establish that every trail or other cableway is available.
Plan the details
- Choose your shore base
- For Dali tours, compare the actual hotel location with your chosen visits. Shuanglang, Wase and western-shore paths are not interchangeable pickup points. A full-lake drive can consume time better spent walking in one area.
- Water and mountain weather
- Wind and weather can affect sailings and mountain transport. Bring layers and sun protection, use current operator notices and keep an alternative that does not depend on clear summit views.
- Local life and food
- Dali tours can leave space for ordinary meals and local markets without prescribing a restaurant list. Ask about ingredients, respect household privacy and do not assume private courtyards are public attractions.
Regional connections
Dali tours connect naturally with onward travel to Kunming or Lijiang when the full station transfer and hotel change are included. Shaxi can be a deliberate regional stop, but its Jianchuan location should shape the road plan rather than being treated as a quick lake-side detour.
Questions before your visit
How should I start planning Dali tours?
Choose your accommodation area, then select a town, lake experience and optional mountain or heritage visit. Add distant Shaxi only with enough road time.
Is Shaxi part of Dali Ancient Town?
No. Shaxi is a separate settlement in Jianchuan County. Its location and transfer requirements differ from Dali city and Erhai.
