Plan at a glance
- Choose high-mountain scenery or a lower walk before buying the ticket.
- Keep the return simple by using the same cableway unless a longer route is confirmed.
- Check the operating section and last descent on the day of your visit.
Start with the destination above the cableway
Choosing a Cangshan cableway in Dali starts with the mountain area you want to visit. Ximatan is the higher-mountain choice; Gantong serves the Qingbixi area; Zhonghe connects with the Zhonghe Temple area and the mountainside walking route. They have different entrances and do not form one interchangeable ticket.
For a first visit, choose one return ride and a clearly defined walk beyond it. A cable car reduces the climb but does not remove stairs, uneven paths or the need to reach the return station in time. Ask about the route after the ride, not only the minutes spent in the cabin.
Ximatan: choose it for the higher landscape
Choose Ximatan when the high-mountain setting is the main reason for your visit and everyone can manage the altitude and walking involved. Do not treat it as a short lake-level outing. Bring warm clothing even if the town feels comfortable.
The full route is weather-dependent. The local tourism transport service specifically advises checking whether Ximatan is operating in full on the day. A lower or partial service is not the same experience as reaching the upper area.
Before buying, ask what happens if the upper section closes and whether a partial trip is acceptable to you. Avoid a tight onward train or flight after the mountain. If someone feels unwell at altitude, shorten the visit and seek appropriate assistance rather than pushing on to finish the photographs.

Gantong and Zhonghe: different lower routes
Gantong is the option to investigate for Qingbixi and a lower mountain visit. The operator describes its connection to the stream area. Check the currently open paths and decide how much walking to add; do not assume every sight listed in an old description is reachable on the day.
Zhonghe is associated with Zhonghe Temple and the Yudai mountainside path. It suits a plan built around a selected walk rather than the upper Ximatan area. Current path openings and the return arrangement still need checking.
Do not buy one cableway up and another down simply because a map connects them. A crossing can add substantial walking, and path restrictions or different closing times can break the plan. A same-route return is easier to organise when time or walking ability is limited.

Compare the ticket contents, not just the price
The municipal price decision dated 25 July 2025 set the Gantong cableway fare at RMB 100 return and RMB 65 one way per person, roughly US$15 and US$10 using our planning conversion of RMB 6.8 to US$1. This is a published cableway fare reference, not a current all-inclusive package quote.
Confirm whether mountain admission, shuttle transport or another attraction is separate. For all three routes, check passport booking and ticket collection with the seller, together with the last uphill and downhill times. Use the date-specific operating notice rather than a general closing time copied from an older guide.
For a guided visit, ask whether the guide rides with you, how much walking is planned and where the driver collects you. On a closure day, agree a town-based alternative or the applicable refund rather than trying an unapproved mountain path.
