Plan at a glance
- Enjoy the lake at walking pace without trying to complete every viewpoint
- Combine a tea visit with time to sit, taste and ask questions
- Choose a hotel that makes meals and your main outings easier
Start with two full days
This Hangzhou travel guide starts with a simple plan: keep one day for West Lake and another for Lingyin Temple or the tea hills. Two full days let you see different sides of the city without moving between sights all afternoon. A third day is useful for museums, the canal or a slower pace.
West Lake is the main reason many people visit. You can walk beside the water, cross a causeway, sit in a garden or take a boat. The changing views of hills, pavilions and pagodas are part of a landscape shaped over centuries. You do not need to collect all the named scenic spots to enjoy it.
Choose Hangzhou if you want outdoor time, tea culture and a break from larger-city sightseeing. It still has busy roads, queues and crowded weekends. Staying overnight gives you more choice of when to walk, but it does not guarantee an empty lakefront.
One day from Shanghai works for a focused lake visit and lunch. Two days are better if Lingyin or a proper tea tasting matters to you. Add Wuzhen as a separate excursion or overnight stop; do not squeeze it into the same short day as Hangzhou's main sights.

Choose a small part of West Lake first
The east shore around Hubin is a convenient starting point for a short first walk. It has easy access to city services and places to eat. You see the lake directly without committing to a long route, which is useful after a train journey or when travelling with a mixed-pace group.
For a longer walk, choose a named start and finish. Broken Bridge and Bai Causeway make a different outing from the southern lakeside near Leifeng Pagoda. Su Causeway takes you across the lake through a series of bridges. A route that looks short on a map can take much longer with photographs and stops.
Allow two to three hours for a selected lakeside section and a rest, rather than promising a complete circuit. Choose a boat as an alternative perspective, not as something you must add. Check the departure pier, destination and whether an island stop is included before buying.
The open lakeshore and individual paid attractions are different things. Budget separately for boats, pagodas and any other ticketed stops. Cycling uses permitted roads around the lake; do not plan to ride along Su or Bai Causeway. Our detailed lake guide compares these choices.
Pick a temple visit or a tea afternoon
Lingyin sits in a wooded valley west of the lake. The temple halls and the nearby Buddhist carvings at Feilai Feng give the visit more substance than a quick entrance photograph. Allow a half day including the journey, document checks and a walking route suited to your group.
Admission to the Lingyin–Feilai Feng scenic area is free under the policy introduced in December 2025, but a confirmed reservation is still necessary. On-site registration ended in February 2026. Read our reservation guide before travelling, especially if Lingyin is your main reason for visiting Hangzhou.
Longjing Village offers tea fields and places to drink tea. Choose a hosted tasting if you want someone to explain the leaves and brewing. A walk past tea bushes does not automatically include picking, a roasting lesson or English interpretation. Confirm those activities individually.
For a less commercial introduction, consider the China National Tea Museum. It has two campuses with different exhibitions. Pick one that fits your route, and check its opening notice. A museum visit and a village tasting can complement each other, but you do not need both on a short afternoon.

Where to stay for an easy first visit
For a short first stay, look around the east or northeast side of West Lake with a practical walk to a metro station. This can balance the lake, restaurants and arrival transport. Check the exact hotel entrance and walking route; a listing described as “West Lake” can cover a large area.
A lake-view room is optional. You may get more value from a comfortable room, quiet nights and easy breakfast than from a partial view through another building. Ask which room category has the advertised view, and whether road noise affects it.
A hotel near the tea hills can suit a slower stay built around that area. It may be less convenient for evening meals elsewhere or an early train. Confirm taxi access, steps to the room and luggage assistance, especially for a small hillside property.
Station hotels are useful for very late arrivals or early departures. They are not automatically the best base for several days at the lake. Hangzhou East, Hangzhou West and Hangzhou railway stations are different places. Match the hotel and transfer to the exact name on your ticket.
For families or friends sharing, check actual beds and usable space rather than relying on a room's label. Ask about breakfast time, laundry and lift access when they affect the trip. Changing hotels for a small saving can use more time than it saves money.
Keep transfers and meals simple
Use the metro for suitable cross-city journeys, then walk or take local transport to your chosen starting point. A metro stop near the lake does not put you at every attraction. For Lingyin and tea villages, check the final road section and any dated traffic controls. A private car still has to follow them.
When comparing a Shanghai connection, count the hotel-to-station journey, security, the train and the journey from the arrival station. Choose a service on your actual date through China Railway. Do not build the day around a train duration quoted without its station names.
For lunch, select a restaurant near the part of the city you are already visiting. A simple bowl of noodles or a few shared dishes can keep the afternoon flexible. Hangzhou dishes may contain river fish, pork, soy sauce or cooking wine; explain dietary needs before ordering. A dish's name alone will not tell you every ingredient.
Tea is an enjoyable stop, but establish what the tasting costs and whether buying leaves is optional. Ask for the weight and total price of any tea you choose. Keep food and shopping breaks in the plan instead of treating them as time left over after sightseeing.

Weather and extra days
Spring and autumn often suit walking, but choose your actual days by the forecast and holiday calendar. Blossom or autumn colour is an extra rather than a fixed-date promise. An early lakeside walk can be comfortable, while a busy holiday may call for a shorter route and more patience at transport stops.
In hot weather, walk early and use the middle of the day for a meal, museum or rest. In wet weather, paths and bridge surfaces can be slippery. A light shower may still allow a short walk; strong wind or a storm can change boat operations. Keep an indoor option that is actually open.
With a third day, the Grand Canal area offers waterside streets and a different view of the city. Choose one district rather than trying to follow the whole canal. Textile enthusiasts can consider the China National Silk Museum, while Xixi Wetland deserves its own transport and walking plan.
Wuzhen is in Tongxiang, within Jiaxing, rather than central Hangzhou. It needs a separate travel day. Qiandao Lake is another longer journey, not a quick addition after lunch by West Lake. Decide whether these places matter enough to add nights rather than making every day longer.
For a tailored Hangzhou visit, start with the two experiences you care most about and your arrival and departure details. Request a clear split between transport, guiding, admission and optional tastings or boats. Local help is most useful when it makes those connections work, not when it adds more stops.
