Plan at a glance
- Understand where the train actually takes you.
- Compare the full journey rather than the train ride alone.
- Plan luggage and the final connection before arrival.
The route is short; your hotel journey may not be
The Shanghai Maglev train runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road. It does not run to Hongqiao Airport, Hongqiao railway station or every central district. Check your arrival airport before building a transfer around it.
At Longyang Road, most visitors need another train or a car. Count the walk to the platform, ticket purchase, waiting and the onward connection when comparing options. A fast ride can still be inconvenient if it leaves you making several changes with large bags.
Choose it when the route fits your hotel or when the train itself is part of what you want to experience. For a late arrival, a large family or limited mobility, compare a direct road transfer and the available metro route before deciding.

Check the current timetable and ticket conditions
Use the airport or operator’s current information for the first and last trains. A flight arrival time is not the time you reach the station: immigration, baggage collection and the walk through the terminal come first. If the connection looks tight, have another transfer option ready.
Check whether a ticket is single or return and how long a return ticket remains valid. Only buy a return when it matches your departure airport and dates. Keep the ticket or access method available until you have finished the journey.
Do not choose the ride solely because an old article promises a particular top speed. Operating speeds and service patterns can change. The practical value is whether the connection works for your day.
Luggage and the last connection
Keep your passport, phone and hotel address easy to reach. If using a car after Longyang Road, agree on the meeting location and send the hotel’s Chinese address. A driver needs a practical pickup point, not simply the name of a large station.
For public transport, check the onward line and destination before boarding. Avoid planning a route from an English hotel name alone; similar names can refer to different branches. An offline screenshot of the route is useful if your phone connection is not ready.
If you are already staying in central Shanghai, travelling out just to ride the Maglev is a separate outing. Decide whether that journey interests you more than another city visit. You do not need to include it merely because it appears in a list of Shanghai transport highlights.
