Tour highlights

01

An overland southern Silk Road

The Urumqi, Turpan and Kashgar tour travels through Kucha’s Buddhist sites and Hotan’s oasis traditions before Kashgar.

02

A real desert-road stage

The Aral–Hotan highway crosses the Taklimakan on an agreed road route with planned service stops.

03

Craft, community and history

A basic Atlas silk demonstration, Yarkand memorial visits and Kashgar’s lanes introduce distinct local contexts.

DAY 01Arrive at the northern gateway

Your Urumqi, Turpan and Kashgar tour starts with the following arrangements. Meet your guide and driver at Urumqi Tianshan Airport or Urumqi Railway Station for the hotel transfer. No fixed visits are scheduled, leaving time to recover from the journey. If you arrive early, ask for a nearby dining or bazaar recommendation rather than committing to another long excursion.

All confirmed times use Beijing time, UTC+8. Daylight varies by season. Before travel, the team reviews the full route, original passport requirements, accommodation registration and the documents needed for the planned Pamir day; a tour booking itself does not grant border-area access.

DAY 02Flaming Mountains → Tuyugou → Emin Minaret

Drive around 2.5–3 hours toward Turpan and begin with a 30–45-minute visit in the permitted Flaming Mountains area. Continue to Tuyugou for 1.5–2 hours among earthen buildings, vineyard settings and the accessible village lanes. Mosque views are from the authorised public areas, and photographs of residents require their consent.

At Emin Minaret, allow around an hour to examine the geometric brickwork and learn about the oasis’s Islamic architectural traditions. Do not assume the tower itself can be climbed. The basin can be very hot, so place exposed stops around the date’s conditions and keep a proper shaded lunch break. Stay in Turpan.

DAY 03Jiaohe → Karez → Korla

Start early at Jiaohe, allowing 2–2.5 hours on the approved paths through the earthen city remains. Streets, religious buildings and administrative areas help explain the oasis’s connections with wider trade routes. Shade is limited, and the schedule must reflect heat rather than leaving the exposed walk to the hottest part of the day.

Continue to the selected Karez visitor site for 1–1.5 hours, where accessible channels and displays explain underground water supply. Then drive approximately five to six hours to Korla, with meals and comfort stops in addition. This is a long touring-and-transfer day whose closing times and evening arrival need supplier review before booking.

DAY 04Korla → Subash ruins → Kizilgaha beacon → Kuqa

Drive roughly 3.5–4.5 hours toward Kuqa. At the Subash Buddhist Ruins, spend about 1.5 hours on the accessible visitor circuit, looking at the remains of monasteries and stupas associated with ancient Kucha. The archaeological setting is not a reconstructed, fully intact temple.

Continue for a 45–60-minute visit to the Kizilgaha Beacon Tower viewpoint, where rammed-earth remains introduce communication and frontier defence along the route. Keep local road links, lunch and entry procedures in the day’s allowance before checking into the Kuqa hotel.

DAY 05Kizil caves → Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon

Visit the Kizil cave-temple complex for about 1.5–2 hours, following the site’s official booking, guiding and conservation arrangements. The accessible caves and language support are confirmed in advance; a particular cave or special section is not guaranteed, and interior photography follows the authority’s rules.

Continue to Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon for a 2.5–3-hour walk through the open red-sandstone passages. The caves and canyon lie on different road approaches from Kuqa, so provisionally allow roughly five to six hours of driving across the day as well as the visits. Rain, flood risk or rockfall can close the canyon. This long day requires confirmation of the actual roads, final-entry times and driver arrangements before sale; no closed trail is used to retain the itinerary.

DAY 06Kuqa Palace → Grand Mosque → Aral

Allow about 1.5 hours at Kuqa Palace, distinguishing surviving features, reconstructed spaces and the exhibits used to tell local administrative and family history. Continue to Kuqa Grand Mosque for 45–60 minutes when its public visitor areas are open. Respect clothing and photography instructions and do not enter spaces reserved for worship.

Drive around 3.5–4.5 hours toward Aral and the Tarim Basin. There is no extra desert excursion on arrival. Check in at the booked property, with its actual room and local facilities specified rather than inferred from a generic city-hotel description.

DAY 07Aral → Taklimakan desert highway → Hotan

Cross the Taklimakan on the agreed Aral–Hotan highway route, provisionally around six to seven hours before extended weather or traffic delays. Dunes, shelterbelts, irrigation works and the vegetation around the road show how the crossing is maintained. Carry the supplies needed for the stage and use confirmed rest and fuel stops.

When permitted, take a 30–45-minute walk or photo stop in a designated safe area. This is a highway journey, not an off-road drive into uninhabited dunes. Sandstorms, heat, roadworks or controls may require a changed timing or route agreed with the operator. Finish in Hotan with no assumption that a late arrival leaves time for another attraction.

DAY 08Hotan Museum → Atlas silk → town life

Spend about two hours at Hotan Museum, selecting objects that explain the Khotan oasis and the southern Silk Road. Continue to a local Atlas silk workshop for 1–1.5 hours. The included basic demonstration introduces the dyed warp threads, patterns and weaving process; live production depends on the workshop’s actual schedule, with finished textiles used to explain the method when weaving is paused.

Walk in central Hotan or a local market for 1–1.5 hours, with no compulsory purchase. An optional 2.5–3-hour evening visit to Yotkan Cultural Scenic Area is separately booked. Its performance streets are a modern cultural presentation inspired by Khotan, not an excavated ancient city. Confirm the return time after a full day.

DAY 09Hotan → Yarkand memorial sites → Kashgar

Allow approximately 3.5–4 hours by road to Yarkand. Spend 1.5–2 hours at the accessible royal cemetery, Amannisahan memorial and agreed public religious areas. Your guide places the Yarkand Khanate and Twelve Muqam tradition in context while following the site’s rules for rituals, photography and access. A memorial visit is not a promise of a live musical performance.

Continue roughly three to 3.5 hours to Kashgar, giving a total road allowance of about 6.5–7.5 hours before the visit, meals and checks. Arrival is likely to be late in the day. Stay in Kashgar and leave the Old City programme for the next day.

DAY 10Old City → handicrafts → teahouse → Id Kah

Spend 3–3.5 hours walking the permitted Old City lanes, bakeries and community spaces, with a further 45–60 minutes in the handicraft streets. Your guide explains both traditional building techniques and the renewal that shapes the present neighbourhood. Ask before photographing residents or entering working premises.

Pause for about an hour at the agreed traditional teahouse, then visit Id Kah Mosque for around 45 minutes when visitor access is open. The site’s worship and photography rules take priority. Fit any required in-person border-permit appointment into the confirmed business-hour plan before tomorrow’s excursion; approval and lake access are not guaranteed by holding a tour reservation.

DAY 11Authorised Pamir day → White Sand Lake → Karakul

Depart only after the required documents, eligibility and route authorisation are confirmed. Carry the original passport and follow the actual checkpoint process along the Karakoram Highway. Foreign travellers requiring the electronic border-management permit must apply in person at the designated authority, with document preparation and appointment support arranged beforehand; issuance is an official decision.

Allow about one hour at White Sand Lake and 1.5–2 hours around Karakul’s permitted viewpoints, at roughly 3,600 metres. Walk gently and consider the altitude and long road stage when deciding whether this day suits you; seek individual medical advice beforehand where relevant. The return to Kashgar makes a roughly 10–12-hour day under workable conditions, with around six to eight hours of roads and checks as a provisional allowance. This route does not continue to Tashkurgan or Panlong, and weather or access restrictions require an agreed alternative.
