Plan at a glance
- Stay near an old-town entrance for walks and meals without repeated taxi rides.
- Leave time for a market visit and a proper lunch, rather than collecting photo stops.
- Keep the mountain extension separate so city sightseeing and road travel each have enough time.
How many days should you spend in Kashgar?
Two full sightseeing days are a useful starting point for a first city visit. That gives you time for old-town streets, a mosque visit when tourist access is available, a meal that is not rushed and a market outing. Count arrival and departure separately if your flight or train leaves little usable time.
One full day can work for a short stop: choose an old-town walk, lunch and one additional visit. It is not enough to add a long Pamir excursion comfortably. With a third city day, slow the pace, spend longer with a guide or move a visit to a suitable trading day.
This Kashgar travel guide treats the city and the mountains as separate decisions. A road trip towards Tashkurgan adds overnight planning, higher altitude and route checks. Decide whether that is a main reason for coming before buying onward tickets.
What to look for in the old town
Give the old town a walking block rather than a short photo stop. Look at the different shopfronts, bread ovens, courtyards visible from public space and the way busy shopping streets connect with quieter lanes. Leave room to stop for tea instead of following a rigid checklist.
The area around Id Kah and the Gaotai quarter offer different walks. A guide can explain the buildings, local crafts and changes to the neighbourhood. Ask which parts of the visit concern historic fabric and which are restored or newly arranged for visitors. Do not assume every street or interior is unchanged.
A workshop visit is worthwhile when someone is actually working and happy to explain. Ask before entering, handling tools or taking close photographs. A residential doorway is not an invitation to go inside. For purchases, confirm the material and price rather than relying on a story about age or rarity.

Choose a few visits, not every attraction
Id Kah Mosque is a place of worship as well as a visitor landmark. Check that day’s tourist entrance arrangements, dress requirements and any photography restrictions. Plan around worship and follow staff directions; an advertised visiting period does not mean every interior is accessible.
Gaotai suits travellers interested in neighbourhood streets and craft spaces. For either old-town area, choose a starting entrance and a finishing point that your driver can reach. That matters more than tracing the largest possible loop on a map.
The livestock market is a separate excursion outside the central walking area. Choose it for an interest in trade and working markets, not because you expect a staged performance. Confirm the current trading day before arranging the rest of your city stay.
Where to stay: walkable entrance or easy vehicle access?
A hotel close to an old-town entrance is practical for a first visit. You can return for a rest and go out again for dinner without crossing the city. Check the actual entrance on a map: a property described as being in the old town may still involve a walk with luggage.
For a courtyard-style stay, ask about stairs, sound insulation, bathroom layout and how far a vehicle can get. For an early mountain departure or heavy luggage, a hotel with a clear roadside pickup point may be easier. A room’s decoration tells you little about sleep quality.
Send the hotel your passport details through its agreed secure booking process and confirm check-in requirements. Ask about breakfast timing if leaving early, luggage storage during an overnight excursion and whether a late return changes reception arrangements.
Food and breaks are part of the visit
Split your meals between a small snack stop and a seated meal. Trying several filling dishes at once can turn an afternoon walk into an uncomfortable one. Order one or two items first, then add more once you see the portion size.
Use a translated dietary note if ingredients matter. Ask about stock, cooking fat, sauces and shared preparation as well as the main ingredient. A vegetable-looking dish is not automatically suitable for a vegetarian, and a dish without visible nuts is not an allergy guarantee.
In hot weather, keep a longer indoor break in the middle of the day and walk again later. A food guide is most useful when they can explain choices and portions and help with a specific dietary request; a driver alone does not automatically provide that service.
Getting around and agreeing a meeting time
Walk within a chosen old-town area and use a taxi or arranged vehicle for separated visits. Ask your hotel to save destination names and pickup points in Chinese on your phone. At a pedestrian entrance, agree which road the vehicle can use rather than sharing only the attraction name.
Kashgar railway station and the airport are separate from the old-town walking area. Build the transfer around the actual departure point and leave time for check-in and checks. Avoid putting a market visit or a return from the mountains immediately before a flight.
Use Beijing time for transport bookings and explicitly agree the clock time used for local meetings. Repeating the time on both phones is a simple way to prevent confusion. Save your hotel address and the day’s meeting point offline.
Adding the Pamir road without rushing
Choose a turnaround point before choosing the number of days. A shorter scenic drive and an overnight trip to Tashkurgan are different commitments. White Sand Lake and Karakul Lake are different stops; a quote should name each intended visit rather than say only “the lakes”.
For a mountain extension, ask for a written route, overnight location, expected road time and approved access for your travel documents. Add time for stops and checks. A longer itinerary gives more flexibility, but does not remove the need to plan for altitude.
For a city-only visit, an independently booked hotel and local transport can be enough. An English guide can add context to a focused old-town walk. For the mountain trip, compare quotes for the same route, car space, guide language, accommodation and cancellation conditions.
