Plan at a glance
- Build the visit around a confirmed trading day rather than an old Sunday-only timetable.
- Agree the exact entrance and return pickup before getting out of the car.
- Watch trade at a respectful distance, with time to stop when you have seen enough.
Which days does the market open?
The Kashgar livestock market is no longer described by the local authority as a Sunday-only market. A Kashgar City Media Centre notice published on 13 May 2026 announced Thursday and Sunday trading, 10:00–20:00, effective from 14 May. Holidays and special circumstances may bring separate notices.
Reconfirm the date shortly before visiting. Published opening hours do not tell you when the most animals or traders will be present. Ask your hotel or local guide about that week’s trading pattern, rather than assuming the market looks the same all day.

Make sure you are going to the right market
The notice places the city’s cattle and sheep bazaar on the northwestern outskirts beside National Highway G314. It is a separate trip from old-town shopping streets. Show the driver the venue name and a current map pin; “bazaar” by itself can mean a different place.
Ask for a realistic transfer estimate from your hotel and agree whether the driver waits or returns. At a busy entrance, photograph the agreed meeting point and save the vehicle details. Mobile reception or a changing crowd should not be the only way you find each other again.
Do not combine the visit with a tightly timed airport departure. A market morning or afternoon works better alongside a flexible city walk and lunch than a fixed long-distance connection.
What is there to watch?
The interest is in a working market: traders comparing animals, buyers and sellers talking, and vehicles arriving and leaving. You do not need to understand every transaction to notice the different stages of the sale. A guide can explain what is happening without asking anyone to perform for you.
Give yourself a flexible visit of around one to two hours as a planning starting point. Some travellers want longer observation; others find the noise, smell or close presence of large animals enough after a short look. The duration is a suggestion, not an official circuit.
This is not a petting zoo. Keep out of loading routes and let handlers move their animals without having to work around you. Children should stay close to their accompanying adult, and anyone uncomfortable around large livestock can choose another city activity.

Photography, footwear and food
Ask before taking a close portrait or photographing a transaction at short range. A refusal is a reason to put the camera down. Do not stand between an animal and its handler to improve the angle, and avoid treating somebody’s work as a photo session.
Wear closed shoes that you can clean afterwards. Keep your bag close and bring water appropriate for the weather. Choose a place to wash your hands before eating; watching animals and then handling food should not be one uninterrupted activity.
If you eat nearby, check the price and portion before ordering and ask about ingredients when needed. You can also return to the city for a seated meal. A market visit does not have to include eating at the market to be worthwhile.
